about

This is the first single from our upcoming release "The Citrus Suite: 3 Songs About Oranges."

"Florida" is written by Maria Sonevytsky who composed it for a Bushwick Book Club event in response to John McPhee's book ORANGES.

The full EP is coming in August. Come to the release show at Joe's Pub, NYC - August 2nd, 2023, 7pm!

lyrics

Time to go--
Punch the clock and fold.
You forced my hand a year or two ago.
I am not naïve.
Been to Phoenix, New Orleans.
Gal of plenty, met a man of many means
But I wish you hadn’t said what you said last night.
I wish you hadn’t done what you did.
Oh I wish you weren’t laid in a hospital bed.
I’m so tired,
I’m leaving for Florida

FLO—RI-DA Florida.
I’m leaving tomorrow for Florida.

Citrus fruit.
Fascist governors, empty suits.
Gators and huge pythons running loose.

Sunshine state.
Cheap motels and real estate.
Take me there; I can hardly wait
For those mai tais and martinis,
Deck chairs and bikinis.
I’ll disappear just like Houdini, to Florida
